It’s been a very long weekend of discussion regarding Stephen A. Smith’s comments about Ray Rice’s suspension. A reminder that Smith is in hot water for saying that, while men need to continue to be educated that domestic violence is never the answer, “we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation. Not that there’s real provocation, but the elements of provocation, you got to make sure that you address them, because we’ve got to do is do what we can to try to prevent the situation from happening in any way.”
The debate has been ugly for the First Take commentator, with all facets of Twitter giving out their opinion. We finally have our first public comment from ESPN two days after the fact, though as they made it clear in this statement released Sunday, it will not be the last.
“There has been a lot of discussion and reflection on the topic since Friday and it will continue. Stephen A. Smith plans to address the situation on Monday’s First Take and we will have more to say on Monday as well.”
One could argue that this is ESPN more or less promoting one of their own programs before actually delivering any real public comment on the situation. We’ll have to see what both Smith and The Worldwide Leader have to say on Monday. Sadly, it doesn’t appear this is going to quiet down anytime soon.
