She became a lightning rod after word got out earlier this year that she was dating Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks. It might not have been a big deal had Jenny Dell not been working for NESN, the Red Sox television rightsholder as the network’s on-field reporter.

The whole story led to calls for her removal from the games which NESN did just before Spring Training. In the interim, NESN assigned Dell to co-anchor its nightly highlights program, but that ended this week when the network decided to let her out of her contract. In a typical terse statement when a personnel decision is made, NESN issued the following press advisory:

NESN and Jenny Dell have mutually agreed that this is the right time for her explore other opportunities full time. Today is her last day at the network. A search is underway for her replacement on NESN Sports Today.

Dell did take the high road when she tweeted that she was leaving.

So one of the more interesting chapters in New England sports media has come to an end. Before the whole Middlebrooks affair became public, it was speculated that Dell would land at Fox Sports 1. There’s no word if that is where she’s headed or if she’ll land at another network.
