It seems unfathomable, but today represents the 25th Anniversary of the theatrical release of Major League, one of the most iconic sports movies of all-time. Major League introduced us to some of the best characters in the history of sports movies, like Roger Dorn, Lou Brown, Pedro Cerrano, and of course Rick Vaughn. It also introduced the losing culture of professional sports in Cleveland to the mainstream, which adds to its timeless value.
But the highlight of Major League and its sequel Major League II (which I would argue is just as good if not better than the original) is broadcasting legend Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle.
The Hall of Fame Brewers announcer is one of the funniest men in sports and many of his quotes as Harry Doyle have been imitated by fans of the movie over the past 25 years. There probably hasn’t been an MLB game played since where somebody in the stands didn’t let out a “juuuuuuuust a bit outside.” The fact that Uecker didn’t win an Oscar for his performance as Harry Doyle is proof that the system is fixed.
Here’s some of the best Harry Doyle clips as a tribute to the 25th Anniversary of Major League and Bob Uecker…
