Remember back in January, when Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch showed up to Super Bowl Media Day and answered every single question regardless of how it was asked with “I’m Just Here So I Won’t Get Fined”? Lynch soon applied for a trademark for the phrase after the event, and as Darren Rovell of ESPN reports today the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office have granted him the trademark rights on the iconic phrase.
The running back is no stranger to trademarking his own words, as ESPN reports he’s the owner of four trademarks, including “BeastMode,” which is his clothing apparel line. He didn’t follow through trademarking “About That Action Boss,” however, dropping the application 10 days ago. He’s done an excellent job at monetizing himself outside of football, as aside from the trademarks he’s got endorsement deals with Skittles, Pepsi and a the underwear brand PSD.
Lynch isn’t the first athlete to file a trademark for a phrase, as Lance Armstrong (LIVESTRONG), Manny Ramirez (Manny being Manny) and Kirk Cousins (You Like That?) are among the many athletes to do so. It’s a great way to build a brand with something memorable you said.
Lynch doesn’t speak all that often, but when he does you know you’re going to get some gold – or something just as valuable to him.
