Adrian Wojnarowski’s Yahoo NBA site The Vertical, which was mulled this summer, likely made part of his deal when he signed a new four-year contract with Yahoo, and officially announced in December, is picking up plenty of steam. The site had already announced the hires of respected writers like Michael Lee, Jonathan Givony, and Mike Schmitz, and now they’ve officially added another big name, Sports Illustrated‘s Chris Mannix. The Big Lead’s Ryan Glasspiegel reported Dec. 21 that Mannix was heading to Yahoo, so this isn’t terribly surprising, but Mannix himself made it official Thursday (and even changed his Twitter handle from @ChrisMannixSI to @ChrisMannixYS):

Mannix should be a nice pick-up for The Vertical. He’s covered the NBA for SI since 2003, but has also done plenty of unconventional participatory journalism pieces, such as playing guard in the D-League, boxing Juan Manuel Marquez and trying bull riding (which left him with both a good story and a fractured collarbone). He’s written plenty of impressive NBA features as well, including ones on Dajuan Wagner, Reggie Evans and Ronnie Turiaf. He also has a solid background in radio, video and shorter pieces, giving him a versatility that may be useful in this new gig. Here’s some of what he plans to be doing in the new job:

Mannix will continue hosting his NBC Sports Radio show as well, which is going to air daily now from 3-7 Eastern, Monday to Friday. He also mentioned that he may do boxing work from time to time at Yahoo as well. It will be interesting to see how he fits into Wojnarowski’s site, but he certainly has an impressive reputation, and should help strengthen The Vertical.
