Legendary CBS college football play-by-play man Verne Lundquist is hanging up his microphone after this season, and while he may not receive a Scully-esque retirement tour, he’ll get a pretty good sendoff Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa, when he serves as guest picker on ESPN’s College GameDay.

One of the cool things about Gameday is that it doesn’t discriminate against non-ESPN games, and it’s cool that the show is willing to reach across enemy lines to the CBS booth to honor Lundquist.
Some people on Twitter seemed concerned that Lundquist will be picking the game he’s calling, but he’ll likely abstain from tabbing a winner in Bama-A&M for fear of appearing biased.
Lundquist is wrapping up what has been a truly sensational broadcasting career. The 76-year-old Minnesotan has been calling games nationally since 1974, specializing in football, basketball and golf while working primarily for CBS. He’ll call it quits after this college football season ends and will be replaced by Brad Nessler.
