Before he faces Julio César Chávez Jr. this weekend, Jake Paul first had to deal with Piers Morgan.
Ahead of his upcoming fight against the former WBC middleweight champion, Paul appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored to promote the event. And unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to contentious, ultimately resulting in the former YouTuber abruptly ending the interview.
The conversation began with Morgan calling attention to Paul’s sombrero, referring to the hat as “cultural appropriation.” That prompted the Westlake, Ohio, native to refer to himself as “the greatest Mexican fighter of all-time,” eliciting a laugh from Morgan who then turned the conversation toward the fight.
After Paul insisted that he would make light work of Chávez Jr., Morgan then played a clip of himself, Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford downplaying the former YouTuber’s boxing skills during a recent interview. Paul responded by stating that Morgan, Álvarez and Crawford had gotten their “panties in a wad” and a were “butthurt,” prompting the two to debate the merits of the 28-year-old’s November victory over Mike Tyson.
“Peak Tyson, you wouldn’t have lasted 10 seconds,” Morgan stated.
“That’s what you think,” Paul replied.
“No, I know that,” Morgan insisted. “You think you would have beaten peak Mike Tyson?… Jake, no disrespect to you… you against Mike Tyson, you would have had two hopes: no hope or Bob Hope.”
“And you versus going to the gym, you’re still a fat ass,” Paul responded “So what do you want to talk about?”
The English media personality rebutted that he’s been in the gym the past two days.
“You don’t think I can beat Mike Tyson, I don’t think you go to the gym,” Paul replied. “We can sit here all day.”
From there, the two went back and forth in what ultimately resembled more of a schoolyard argument than an actual interview. After Paul stated that Morgan’s opinion doesn’t matter, the host replied by asking why he was doing his show, leading the former Disney Channel star to claim he was just leveraging his audience to sell more pay-per-views.
“I don’t give a f*ck about your show. Dumba**, this a f*cking business enterprise,” Paul said, launching one final sales pitch before abruptly signing off from the interview as Morgan laughed.
“Cheers Jake,” the 60-year-old said after Paul had already signed off. “I really enjoyed that.”
Considering the personalities involved, it’s far from shocking that this conversation went off the rails. Perhaps the only surprise here is that it still managed to last nearly eight minutes before Jake Paul brought it to an abrupt end.
