Nearly six years after leaving ESPN and two and a half years after his CBS Sports Network show was ended, Jim Rome is returning to your television screens.
CBS Sports Network announced Tuesday that beginning in January, it will simulcast Rome’s CBS Sports Radio show weekdays from 12-3 p.m. ET.
Rome has plenty of television experience, having hosted Jim Rome is Burning on ESPN2 before departing for CBS in 2012. He was given a new television show, called ROME, on CBS Sports Network until the program was canceled in 2014. His show on the CBS-owned Showtime was similarly short-lived, with the network opting in December 2015 not to renew it after four seasons. Since then, Rome has focused primarily on his nationally syndicated radio show, while also contributing to The NFL Today.
Much of CBS Sports Network’s daytime programming is simulcast from its radio lineup, with The Morning Show with Boomer from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Tiki and Tierney from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The network had a bit of a hole in the hours when The Jim Rome Show will air, usually featuring a mishmash of niche sports and replays. On Tuesday, for example, CBS Sports Network will re-air the Auburn-LSU game from Saturday, followed by the 2017 CrossFit Games. On Wednesday, it will feature another yet-unlisted college football replay. On Thursday, we’ll get an auto-racing series called the Intercontinental GT Challenge. Other days, the early afternoon timeslot on CBS Sports Network is a replay of the simulcast Morning Show with Boomer in that time-slot.
Although a simulcast of The Jim Rome Show may not be the most thrilling programming a network could air, it makes a good deal of sense for CBS Sports Network. And besides, Rome has certainly had his moments on live TV.
