After an undefeated start to the season and sneaking into the Top 25 in the AP Poll, Navy suffered their second loss in consecutive weeks on Saturday.
After falling to Notre Dame last week, the Midshipmen suffered a much more unexpected defeat, losing 24-10 to Rice. The result dropped Navy’s record to 6-2 while the upset victory propelled Rice to a 3-6 record on the season.
Coming into the game, the Naval Academy were heavy favorites. Navy was a 10.5 point favorite in the game, or -395 on the moneyline. Those odds would have made them popular picks in various parlays or other bets throughout the day on a college football Saturday.
But as a reminder to anyone interested in sports betting, it’s not a good idea to take to social media to complain at people or teams that wreck your parlays. Especially when that team is the Navy of the United States of America.
Who knew that Kevin Durant ran the Navy X account?
College athletics is particularly vulnerable to sports betting and gambling controversies. Some states have even pulled individual betting lines for college athletes. And with the new era of sports betting that has rapidly swept over the country, it’s hard to escape from its influence.
But we’re pretty sure if there’s one institution that isn’t moved by the sports betting wave, it would be any branch of the United States military.
