Brent Musburger didn’t expect Dan Fouts’ ad-libbed line from ‘The Waterboy’ to make movie

Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game was a reunion of sorts for longtime broadcast partners Brent Musburger and Dan Fouts. During the game, the two shared a story about an exchange they had while filming 1998’s movie, The Waterboy.

While Musburger was in the NBC booth, talking with Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth, Fouts was on the field, being interviewed by Melissa Stark. When Stark asked for Fouts’ “best Brent story,” the Hall of Fame quarterback had no trouble coming up with one.

“Well, I know I speak for millions of Brent fans around the world — of course, the famous movie, The Waterboy, which we’re still waiting for our nomination for the Oscar — when I say the immortal words of, ‘Shut up, Brent,'” Fouts said.

That was indeed something Fouts said to Musburger in the movie.

But according to Musburger, that wasn’t planned. When seeing the movie, Musburger was also surprised to see that the line made the final cut.

“Listen, I gotta follow up my man, Foutsy,” Musburger said. “We were working with Adam Sandler on Waterboy and I asked for a script. And he said, ‘No, you and Dan, just ad-lib, like you do a football game.’

“So Brent got carried away like he does,” Musburger continued, briefly shifting to third-person narration. “And I’m rambling off. And Fouts goes, ‘Shut up, Brent.’ And I figure that’s on the cutting room — it winds up in the movie. And now my wife says it all the time. Marlene says, ‘Shut up, Brent.’ Ah, Foutsy. You got me in deep trouble, I’ll tell ya.”
