The Houston Astros won the AL pennant in very dramatic fashion on Saturday night. Jose Altuve hit a walk-off two-run homer vs Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman to give Houston a pennant-winning Game 6 ALCS victory over New York.
It’s a moment that will be remembered in the baseball world for a long time, and especially by Astros fans, of course.
FS1 play-by-play man Joe Buck was well aware of how special the moment was, along with where he was during the call (Minute Maid Park in Houston).
“ALTUVE! HAS JUST SENT THE ASTROS TO THE WORLD SERIES!”
And then he went silent for the next minute and a half. He let the jubilant scene at Minute Maid Park provide the sounds.
That’s a pro move by Buck, showing a great understanding of the significance of the moment and his surroundings. He got in a great call, and then let the Houston crowd finish it off. That will only add on to the chills for Astros fans watching this highlight for many years to come (especially if the Astros win the World Series).
How did the call sound from other announcers covering the game? Timothy Burke put together a video featuring — in addition to Buck’s call — the Astros radio call, the ESPN Deportes call, the ESPN Radio call, and even the Russian TV call:
Here’s awesome video of how Robert Ford’s call on Astros radio sounded and looked:
And on the losing side of things, here’s how it sounded from John Sterling on Yankees radio:
