While the MLB Speedway Classic was a fun idea, the rain at Bristol Motor Speedway made the day a confusing mess. That included the people at Fox covering the game.
After a lengthy delay, the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds finally got going. But it was quickly apparent that the conditions were not suited for baseball. Puddles were on the field, and the Fox cameras even struggled to show clean shots. So, in the bottom of the first inning, with the Reds leading 1-0, the game was once again delayed.
As the broadcast went back to the Fox studio crew, there was still some uncertainty about what the next step was, at least from the crew itself. Those watching the broadcast might have known what was going on. Because directly behind Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Derek Jeter was the stadium videoboard. And by that point, the message on the board said that the game had been suspended until Sunday.
Fortunately, it wasn’t much longer before everyone else was clued in. Michael Hill, MLB’s Senior Vice President of on-field operations, told Ken Rosenthal that the game had been suspended and would resume on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
