Before the first round at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Scottie Scheffler delivered a philosophical press conference about where his accomplishments on the golf course fit in to the grand scheme of life, the universe, and everything in it.
Maybe after his first round, someone can ask for his thoughts about fart jokes just to change gears a little bit and bring back some levity.
At -2 on the day and climbing the leaderboard, Scheffler hit a brilliant approach shot to just a few feet on the 17th hole. He would make the putt for birdie and finish at -3 near the top of the leaderboard. But as the ball was in the air flying majestically towards the pin, someone broke the awestruck silence by very loudly passing gas. At least it wasn’t in Scheffler’s backswing.
Whoever had the moment of flatulence unfortunately had it heard worldwide. It definitely made the international feed because not only could it be heard on the video above, presumably from the home broadcasters in the UK, but it also made its way to American television. Sadly, Smylie Kaufmann was reporting on the course and talking over the ball in the air so viewers stateside only heard it break through a little bit. That, friends, is the hard-hitting analysis that you come to this website for.
But this clip? This clip is perfection. The golf shot from Scottie Scheffler, the dramatic pause, the perfectly timed interruption, and then the laughter and commentary about the “wind from behind” with a replay that included the fart noise once again. It’s a lot more entertaining than hearing some drunk yahoo in the crowd shout out “MASHED POTATOES.”
