Cap Carey carved out a memorable niche covering college hockey in the North Country area of Upstate New York for 30 years. The former Watertown Daily Times reporter passed away Wednesday, February 19.
Sister Katherine Carey shared news of Carey’s passing on Facebook.
“We are saddened to say that Cap passed away in the early hours on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from a massive stroke,” she wrote. “It was quick and he did not suffer and for that we thank God.”
A Manhattan Beach, CA native and University of Arizona grad, Carey worked as a sports reporter in Upstate New York for 30 years. Many remembered and appreciated his focus on college hockey programs, specifically ECAC Hockey. Following his journalism career, Carey retired to Arizona.

Many fellow journalists and sports media members also chimed in with remembrances and appreciation for Carey and his presence.
Our condolences to the Carey family.
