NFL Network analyst and Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders has “emerged as a candidate” for the Florida State football head coaching position, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1192662679162441728Florida State fired Willie Taggart on Sunday after the Seminoles went 9-12 in his season and a half as head coach, and veteran FSU assistant coach Odell Haggins is serving as the interim head coach.Sanders, 52, is a legend at Florida State after being a three-sport star for the Seminoles from 1985-88, and following it up with one of the most electrifying careers in NFL history. He has never coached at the college or pro football level, but he’s been an offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian High School (Cedar Hill, Texas) since 2017.And while there may be concerns about Sanders’ lack of coaching experience, recruiting is a huge part of college athletics too. As his NFL Network colleague Steve Mariucci — a former NFL and college head coach — explained, Sanders should immediately be able to get a great recruiting class into Florida State. Mariucci compared the situation to the success Penny Hardaway is quickly having as a coach and recruiter in college basketball at Memphis. The swagger and charisma that have made “Prime Time” a successful TV personality over the years with NFL Network (and before that, CBS) would definitely make him a coach that recruits want to play for, and would energize the FSU program and fanbase.
