The Chicago Bulls are honoring one of their all-time greats, Derrick Rose, with a special night on Jan. 4, and he’ll find a surprising figure calling the action in the United Center.
Chicago Sports Network announced Thursday that former play-by-play announcer Neil Funk, who retired in 2020, will call Saturday night’s game against the New York Knicks.
The team will honor Rose, who retired before the season, with special moments recognizing the former star, his family, and his Bulls teammates. A Chicago native, Rose was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and earned MVP honors in 2011. He played seven seasons in Chicago.
According to a CHSN media release, Funk’s presence will add “a special touch to the game broadcast.” Regular play-by-play man Adam Amin will be in the Dallas area, preparing to call Sunday’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders.
Regular Bulls color analyst Stacey King, who worked with Funk, will handle his normal duties.
The network’s coverage of the special night will begin at 5 p.m. (CT) with a one-hour special, The Chicago Lead, looking at Rose’s career and legacy. The Bulls Countdown Live pre-game show will follow with more Rose-oriented content.
The point guard will also be recognized at halftime.
Funk began working Bulls games in 2008 and, as such, was the voice Bulls fans knew during Rose’s incredible peak years. Many fans seemed enthused to see him return, if only for one game.
