Broadcasts don’t get much more entertaining than what the New York Mets have on a nightly basis.
While there are already countless examples to prove that, another came on Tuesday night as the Mets batted in the bottom of the third inning in their game against the Chicago Cubs.
Tuesday at Citi Field was Dollar Dog Night. Steve Gelbs, the on-field reporter for SNY, got into the theme. During the bottom of the third inning, Gelbs began a “What I Saw in Batting Practice” segment. During that, he talked how different Mets tape the handles of their bats.
And while Gelbs did go into good detail on that, something else dominated the conversation — his attire. Gelbs was dressed in a hot dog suit, much to the delight of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling in the booth and pretty much anyone else watching.
The segment actually might have gone a little longer, but the Mets were retired in order in the bottom of the third. Chicago right fielder Alexander Canario made a stellar catch, slamming into the wall to end the inning.
Before that happened, though, Cohen couldn’t let the obvious dad joke go unsaid.
“I hope you understand, Steve, that when people look back on this report, nobody will remember one word of what you just said about the bat handles,” said Cohen. “However, I want to tell you that in our book, you really have cut the mustard.”
Indeed. This is a segment that viewers will relish.
