During the top of the 4th inning of Saturday’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds, Cardinals announcer Chip Caray had the worst kind of slip of the tongue any announcer could have.

Caray was reading a promo for the Cardinals’ upcoming Disability Pride Night, which takes place Thursday, July 10. Those in attendance will take home a Cardinals cap featuring the Disability Pride flag and the braille lettering of “Cardinals.” However, there was one word in particular that Caray stumbled over, leading to an unfortunate moment (though he did quickly correct himself).

What followed the accidental slur was 31 seconds of dead silence before broadcasting partner Brad Thompson finally broke it to comment on a pitch that was called for a ball.

The moment recalled several other incidents involving announcers and similar slurs, including Oakland A’s announcer Glen Kuiper’s infamous description of the Negro League Museum and former Reds announcer Thom Brennaman’s use of a homophobic slur, caught on a hot mic.

The fact that the Reds were involved in Saturday’s game reminded many people of that Brennaman incident and his apology, which was interrupted by a Nick Castellanos home run. Some responded by saying they were planning to bet on Castellanos homering again on Saturday, as he has developed a reputation for doing so on days of bad news and somber discussions.

As of the time of this writing, neither Caray nor FanDuel Sports Network Midwest has acknowledged the slip-up. We’ll update this post if that changes.

Update: Caray reportedly won’t be punished for this slur, as per a report from Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports.
