The New York Yankees posted a dramatic, come-from-behind victory on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Dave Sims, who now announces games on radio for the Yankees and used to do the same job with the Mariners, was not on the call. Shortly after the game, he explained why.

Following the game, a Mariners fan replied to a Sims post on X, speculating on why he didn’t call the game.

“Dave, first of all good for you sir but as a lifelong M’s fan I’m taking this as you didn’t call this game because maybe you still have some room in your heart for our team and you couldn’t emotionally see the sweep,” the fan said.

Sims, while grateful for the praise, offered a correction.

“You’re kind & generous but incorrect,” he said. “I answered the request of my friend, Hall of Famer Ken Griffey, Jr. to be the voice of this important showcase for the third consecutive year. I like the Mariners, but my alliances have changed.”

Sims previously noted that he’d be calling the HBCU Swingman Classic.

Black involvement in baseball is something Sims recently spoke about as a guest on the Awful Announcing Podcast with Brandon Contes.
