The announcer jinx is undefeated. The New York Mets are far from that.
The Mets took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. For most Major League Baseball teams, the odds would be pretty good that they’d be able to hold on and win the game. The Mets are not most MLB teams, however.
In the top of the ninth, Arizona pinch-hitter Gabriel Moreno doubled against Mets pitcher Jake Diekman. Ketel Marte, who had homered earlier in the game, stepped to the plate with the chance to potentially tie the game or give the D’backs the lead. That’s when WPIX announcer Gary Cohen uttered some very ill-fated words.
“The Mets have lost five games this year that they’ve led after eight innings. That is an enormous number,” said Cohen. “Trying not to make it six.”
You know what happens next. Marte jacked a 439-foot bomb into centerfield for his 12th home run of the year, giving Arizona a 5-4 lead they would hold onto for the win.
You should never underestimate the New York Mets’ ability to make a bad situation worse. Not sure how many times they have to remind Cohen and his fellow broadcasters of this but it should sink in eventually.
