The Chicago White Sox lost their 14th straight game on Thursday in a rather embarrassing 14-2 loss to the Red Sox, setting an unfortunate franchise record in the process. But after the final out, White Sox color commentator Steve Stone shared his optimism that the streak will mercifully come to an end in the second game of the series on Friday.
It’s hard to find much of a silver lining this season thus far if you are the White Sox. To put it kindly, the White Sox have had some severe struggles this year, as Thursday’s loss puts the White Sox at a 15-48 record on the year.
But if there was a silver lining to be found, it would be with starting pitcher Garrett Crochet. The hard-throwing lefty holds a 3.49 ERA and is inside the top five in all of baseball in strikeouts on the year. Of the 15 wins for Chicago on the year, Crochet is responsible for five of them.
After the final out on Thursday, Steve Stone called his shot, predicting that Crochet’s start on Friday will result in the White Sox streak coming to an end.
“And this could be it, out to right center,” said NBC Sports Chicago play-by-play man John Schriffen calling the final out of the game. “And the Red Sox take game one of this four-game series. 14-2 as the White Sox now have the longest single-season losing streak in team history.”
“Yeah, well you can put that 14 up there,” responded Stone. “It’s going to stay there, ’cause Garrett Crochet wins tomorrow. That’s the way this series goes by the way. Red Sox win the first one, White Sox win the second one. And then they worry about three and four when they get there. But that’s the guy that’s gonna end it tomorrow. It’ll stay at 14.”
Crochet is obviously a great pitcher. But it may not be all that smart for Stone to call his shot considering how this season has gone thus far for the White Sox. We will see on Friday whether Stone’s prediction is correct. But it sure seems like this has a ton of potential to backfire.
