While San Francisco Giants legend Will Clark says there’s no beef between him and Rafael Devers, the same may not be true when it comes to Clark and Boston Red Sox announcer Will Flemming.
Flemming, who incidentally is the brother of San Francisco Giants announcer Dave Flemming, said on Boston’s WEEI that Devers had no-showed a workout session at first base with Clark during the series between the two teams in June, which took place less than a week after the Red Sox traded Devers to the Giants. It seemed to feed into the narrative that Devers was lazy.
Following his interview, Flemming issued a clarification on X.
“Since the whole of SF seems mad at me, I just want to clarify again: I was repeating a story that one of the great Giants told on his own pod. I’m not trying to push a narrative or opine about the trade. No one has any ill-will toward Rafi, it was just time for a change here,” Flemming said.
Clark, as Flemming said, had already addressed the matter on his Deuces Wild podcast with Eric Byrnes. On it, he did note that Devers didn’t show up for the workout but also clarified that it wasn’t an issue. One of the things he noted was that, given how things ended for Devers in Boston, he didn’t want to be working out at first base right in front of his now-former team’s dugout, as the visiting dugout at Oracle Park is on the first base side.
And on the latest Deuces Wild, Clark called out Flemming for how he felt the Red Sox announcer spun the story to paint Devers in a negative light.
“I just gotta tell you right now, this is a bunch of bullsh*t,” Clark said. “That’s first off. Second off, hey look, that was, let’s see, that was my first encounter with Rafael Devers. So I didn’t even know him before those 2-3 days that I spent in San Francisco. So, you know, Rafi and I are fine. I’m gonna work with him whenever I get around to first base. And Will Flemming, you can go f*ck off, motherf*cker. Alright? You want to f*cking take a conversation that we’re having and then blow it out of proportion because you’re a f*cking East Coast, piece of sh*t reporter? F*ck off.”
