It’s one thing for the Dallas Mavericks to be mocked on ESPN and other sports platforms for trading Luka Dončić to the Lakers. But the Grammys?
Mavericks fans could have tuned into their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday afternoon and joined play-by-play voice Mark Followill in aptly sorrowing over the decision to trade a 25-year-old global superstar. But for those fans who opted for some counterprogramming, hopefully they didn’t choose the Grammys.
During Sunday night’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, comedian Jim Gaffigan chided the Mavericks while welcoming the audience back from a commercial break, joking that host Trevor Noah had been sent to Dallas.
“During the break, I don’t know how to say this: Trevor Noah was traded to the Dallas Mavericks”

“During the break, I don’t know how to say this,” Gaffigan began. “Trevor Noah was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. So I know this is a shock, but I am now your host.”
In arguably the most shocking trade in NBA history, the Mavericks sent Dončić to the Lakers late Saturday night in a three-team deal that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas. While some have praised the Mavericks for pairing Davis with Kyrie Irving, finding supporters has been a tall task, as Dallas has been met with an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the trade.
Even the Grammys were shocked to see Dallas give up on Dončić, a 25-year-old superstar who seems destined to become one of the best players in NBA history. Noah did later return to the stage to resume emceeing the show. Unfortunately for Mavericks fans, Dončić isn’t coming back.
