The Jacksonville Jaguars’ struggles thus far this season have been quite a shock to many. But seemingly not to Fox Sports’ personality Colin Cowherd, who alluded to some concerns he has had about the commitment quarterback Trevor Lawrence has to football.
On Sunday, Cowherd took to social media to post a clip where he shared his opinion that he would like for his quarterback to be “obsessed” with football.
He added that this is why Patrick Mahomes has had so much success in his eyes. And similarly, he believes Lawrence’s lack of obsession with football is the reason that the Jaguars are off to a 0-3 start.
“I’m not about to try and convince anybody that addiction is a good thing,” said Cowherd. “But in sports and a lot of businesses, for a lack of a better word, obsession not only pays the bills but it can take you to another place. I’m all for some work-life balance. But what really makes people happy is a sense of achievement. And achievement at the highest level takes a certain level of addiction. A certain level of imbalance, a football fixation.
“One of the early criticisms of quarterback Trevor Lawrence was when he said something to the effect of ‘I really love football, but there is more to life than football’. And four years later, he plays just like that. When I look at Patrick Mahomes, he can have a full life. But even after wins, he’s incredibly self-critical. 3-0 not good enough. Mahomes has a competitive sickness some would say. And there will be a therapist in some county or country that would say that’s unhealthy. I know this, it’s healthy for the AFC West standings.”
Cowherd went on to say that he wants his quarterbacks to “love their sport” and have “sleepless nights” after a loss.
It’s an incredibly harsh critique from Cowherd to assume that the reason for Lawrence’s struggles is because he once alluded to there being more to life than football. Truth be told, only Lawrence knows deep down whether his passion for football is where it needs to be to succeed at the NFL level.
Anyone suggesting they are aware of Lawrence and his passion for the sport is simply just assuming things based on what they see on the field. And unfortunately for Lawrence, his poor play has led to Cowherd airing his very drastic opinion of him publically.
