Usually, the worst person you know is a fan of the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, or Los Angeles Lakers.
There’s a generational gap in understanding since those aforementioned teams often reigned supreme on the only readily available channel. But since none of these teams have closely resembled a dynasty since the 2010s, rooting for them is like rooting for Nike, Apple, or Coca-Cola.
So, any chance to poke fun at these teams or fans of said teams is a fever dream for social media admins. It’s a slam dunk for engagement because there’s nothing sports fans like more than pointing their fingers and laughing at the big brands falling flat on their faces. And if there’s a chance to slightly poke fun at even one or two of the teams — and their fans — it’s a race to get said post up.
After their 27-21 win over the Cowboys on Sunday, whoever runs the Atlanta Falcons X (formerly Twitter) account had one locked and loaded in the chamber. “Tough week to be a Yankees fan,” read the caption, noting that the Bronx Bombers had lost the World Series in five games earlier in the week, only for their beloved Cowboys to fall to 3-5 on the season.
And that’s without mentioning that the Lakers suffered their first two losses in the JJ Reddick era earlier in the week.
Tough break.
Some folks might not get the joke about Yankees fans also being Cowboys fans, especially since most Yankees supporters they encounter tend to back either the New York Jets or Giants. But as we’ve learned, many people jumped on the bandwagon during the ‘90s, when both the Yankees and Cowboys were basking in the glow of their success.
For those over 30 who have spent time outside the New York area, the Yankees-Cowboys connection is all too familiar, albeit without much, if any, success.
This is tremendous work by the Falcons’ social media team. As Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino pointed out, it highlights how having twenty-something-year-olds manage social media accounts, those who were born and molded in the darkness of social media lore, can lead to some of the best shitposting you’ve ever seen.
