Well, now we know why the Dallas Cowboys haven’t signed Micah Parsons to an extension. Jerry Jones has been negotiating with the wrong guy.
NFL training camps are officially open, which means the 82-year-old Dallas Cowboys owner is in search of a microphone to speak in front of. And after opening training camp with some strange comments pertaining to the Cowboys’ contract negotiations with Parsons, Jones is going viral for another blunder.
“Of all the players that I’ve ever negotiated with,” Jones began during a recent press conference. “Michael Parson is as savvy and knowledgeable and understanding of his financial business relative to football as any player as I’ve ever been around.”
That’s great, but who is he? Because Cowboys fans and media are much more concerned about the negotiations with Micah Parsons, the All-Pro linebacker who is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. Someone better get to Jones quick before he accidentally gives Parsons’ money to the very savvy and knowledgeable Michael Parson.
There has been an increasing belief that Jones might be starting to lose some of his business savviness in recent years. Last year, Stephen A. Smith compared Jones to Joe Biden in a not-so-flattering way. And some of Jones’ press conference comments to start this year’s training camp have done little to dispel that concern.
Earlier this week, Jones opened camp and addressed the holdup in signing Parsons to a contract extension by mentioning his ankle sprain from last season and teasing the potential that he could be hit by a car in the future.
Jones has undoubtedly demonstrated considerable business and marketing savvy throughout his tenure with the Cowboys. And maybe he’ll prove the doubters wrong as it pertains to his potential demise by signing Parsons or Parson to a steal of a contract. But criticizing your star player for getting injured on the field, imagining them getting hit by a car, and calling them by the wrong name are some bizarre tactics.
