Last January, NFL Network’s Chris Rose gave us one of the more memorable broadcasting moments in a while. There, he asked NFL GameDay Final colleague Maurice Jones-Drew if the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense might be good enough to carry them despite an offensive downturn, saying “Is it possible that they could ride thet D?” And Jones-Drew’s pause and look at Rose, before Rose clarified “The defense,” were a key part of what made this take off:
After the show, Rose posted a selfie with Jones-Drew, saying Jones-Drew left him hanging:
More than a year later, Rose and Jones-Drew took a look back at that segment. As part of a larger interview of Jones-Drew on his Jomboy Media Football Today show that posted Friday, Rose brought up that clip and asked why Jones-Drew reacted the way he did. And Jones-Drew said he thought of his young son in that moment:
“That was kind of like the ‘Pause’ joke that’s been running rampant in my house. So if I would have responded to that in the proper manner, I wouldn’t have been able to come home. So as soon as you said that, in my mind, I saw my youngest son’s face looking at me like ‘What are you about to do?’ And that’s why I had to pause and say ‘Excuse me,’ and then we move forward.”
The even funnier part of that may be Rose’s relaying of how he still gets texts about the sound from that clip appearing with unrelated videos on TikTok, and then saying his oldest son referenced it on his birthday.
“Our older son puts the clip, he put that clip, and goes ‘Happy birthday!'”
While Rose may not be thrilled about that clip or the life it’s taken on, it certainly was a notable broadcasting moment. And Jones-Drew’s reaction was a huge part of that, and it’s quite funny to hear him explain why he did that just that way.
