The 2024 presidential election will be forced to share the spotlight with one of the most important days in America, NFL trade deadline day.
Earlier this year, NFL owners approved moving the league’s trade deadline to the Tuesday after Week 9. Apparently, the United States government didn’t get the memo and now we’re stuck with the trade deadline being on Election Day, a realization ESPN’s Adam Schefter had Monday afternoon on The Pat McAfee Show.
“They pushed back the trade deadline a week, I think it’s November 3rd this year or whatever that may be,” Schefter told McAfee. “Wait, is the trade deadline on the same day as the presidential election this year?”
“You would know better than me, pal,” McAfee said. “Both those things, you look into a lot more than I do. It sounds like you’re saying yes though.”
Not ready to confirm the news himself, Schefter sought the help of another source from McAfee’s audience. “So many people watch this show that I expect that somebody is gonna text me in the next two minutes and say they are or are not on the same day,” Schefter said. “So hopefully somebody is listening and gets that call out.”
But with The Pat McAfee Show more than capable of using Google and a calendar, there was no need to wait those two minutes for a listener to do their dirty work. McAfee was able to confirm the NFL trade deadline is indeed going to occur on Election Day this year.
“It’s nice to know that’s going to be a nice calm day, that Tuesday,” Schefter joked.
What a day that will be for social media engagement. Imagine, Aaron Rodgers on The Pat McAfee Show as Matthew Stafford gets traded to the Miami Dolphins and John King is calculating Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s impact on Donald Trump’s ability to get votes in Pennsylvania.
There are few things in this world capable of making the NFL look small. Taylor Swift proved to be one last year, and a presidential election will undoubtedly be able to stake its claim as another in November.
