Tom Brady and Nick Foles were both at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, watching the NFC Championship Game between the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles. In the fourth quarter, Brady brought up another time they were in the same building — as opposing quarterbacks in Super Bowl LII.
As Fox returned from a commercial break in the fourth quarter, the cameras showed Nick Foles, watching the game from a luxury box. Play-by-play man Kevin Burkhardt didn’t miss the chance to needle his broadcast partner.
“Nick Foles in the building,” Burkhardt said. “Super Bowl MVP that led to that Super Bowl win. Who did he play in that game? Do you know who he played that game?”
“Nick, I don’t hate you,” Brady said. “I’m just jealous of you. You caught it, I didn’t.”
For anyone who may need a refresher, Foles and the Eagles defeated Brady and the New England Patriots 41-33 in a game where a pair of trick plays had a lot to do with the result.
In the second quarter, the Patriots ran a play where Brady handed the ball off to James White, who then lateraled to Danny Amendola. The third part of the play was a long pass from Amendola to Brady, who was wide open down the sidelines. The ball hit Brady on the hands but he couldn’t come down with it.
Facing a fourth-and-goal later in the quarter, the Eagles tried a similar play. While the setup was a little different, the end result of the play was Foles running a route and attempting to catch a pass from Philadelphia’s Trey Burton. The play, which came to be known as the “Philly Special,” worked like a charm as a wide-open Foles caught the pass from Burton for a touchdown.
Time heals all wounds, apparently.
