If Fox is going to have a successful first call of the Indianapolis 500, it probably starts with calling it the Indianapolis 500.
As Fox prepares for The Greatest Spectacle in Racing during its inaugural season with IndyCar, the network aired qualifications over the weekend, and host Chris Myers confused the Indianapolis 500 with the Daytona 500.

“This is your seventh Daytona 500,” Myers said to IndyCar driver Colton Herta, who quickly corrected the announcer to note it was his seventh Indy 500.
“Indy 500, sorry,” Myers said. “I’ve covered the Daytona 500 on Fox. We’re honored to have both.”
Much like this is Fox’s first time covering the Indy 500, the same is true for Myers, who has been part of the network’s NASCAR coverage since 2001. Myers’ long history with NASCAR undoubtedly explains the blunder, but imagine calling the Super Bowl the World Cup final or mistaking the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
And three minutes later, as Myers closed his segment with Herta, he did it again. However, this time, Myers quickly corrected himself before Herta interjected.
“The qualifying continues right after this. We’re live at Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” Myers noted. “Setting the 33 car field for next Sunday’s Daytona 500, Indianapolis! 500.”
After years of complaining about Fox’s NASCAR coverage, racing fans will surely find reasons to complain about their first season of IndyCar coverage. But getting the name correct on one of the biggest events in racing seems like a reasonable request.
