The circumstances surrounding Joe Hamilton’s absence from Saturday’s matchup between Georgia Tech and Syracuse remain unclear.
But we now know that the College Football Hall of Famer’s time as the Yellow Jackets’ radio analyst has come to an end, with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting that Hamilton is no longer employed by Dickey Broadcasting, the parent company of Georgia Tech’s flagship station, 680 The Fan.
“Joe Hamilton is no longer an employee of Dickey Broadcasting Company, and as such, will no longer be heard on (680) The Fan, and/or Georgia Tech radio broadcasts,” Dickey wrote in a statement to the AJC. “Our company made the decision to move in a different direction. We all love and respect Joe and wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Dickey’s response to the newspaper comes just days after Hamilton was absent from the radio booth for the Yellow Jackets’ loss to the Orange on Saturday without an explanation. 680 The Fan’s operations director didn’t respond to two emails from the AJC seeking comment regarding Hamilton’s absence, while a program spokesperson declined to answer, deferring to the radio station. Attempts to contact Hamilton were also unsuccessful.
Awful Announcing reached out to 680 The Fan on Monday but has yet to receive a response.
In addition to his duties as Georgia Tech’s radio analyst, Hamilton also co-hosted 680’s weekday morning show, The Locker Room. The 47-year-old was absent from Monday’s show.
Hamilton’s departure from the station comes two years after the former Yellow Jackets quarterback was named the program’s radio analyst, replacing Sean Bedford. A former Georgia Tech center, Bedford had originally stepped down from the role following the 2021 season but returned to the broadcast booth on Saturday to fill in for Hamilton during his unexplained absence on Saturday. It’s unclear whether he’ll remain the Yellow Jackets’ radio analyst moving forward.
