One of the things about Twitter that we never really stop to consider is that not every human being walking planet earth is on Twitter. While the social media platform’s influence on modern culture is enormous, there’s actually a pretty sizable portion of the population that is not tied to 140 characters. Hard to believe when you’re constantly operating inside the bubble, isn’t it?
Between the Twitter users and the non-Twitter crowd exists a mysterious gray area – people who are on Twitter, but under a different name or alias. One of those men is Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
In an interview with ESPN’s Dana O’Neil, Coach K let us all in on his clandestine Twitter philosophy:
Q: So are you on social media?
Krzyzewski: I follow guys. I don’t want to be on Twitter because I don’t care. I don’t want their opinions. I don’t need to show that I have X amount of followers. But I follow a lot of people on Twitter, under an alias. I tell my guys I’m following you. Then if I see something, you text them, you gotta watch. But there are a lot of cool things that they do. I do like that they do it.
Coach K just might be onto something here. Under an alias, he gets all the benefits of Twitter – keeping up with his players and the news of the day, while not being bombarded with birthday RT requests, recruiting advice, and hate-tweets from rival fanbases. There’s a reason why he’s the winningest coach in college basketball history.
