The start of the 2024-25 NBA season might just be weeks away, but when it comes to the league’s insiders, free agency is just getting started.
Shortly after Adrian Wojnarowski announced his shocking retirement from ESPN to become the general manager of the men’s basketball program at St. Bonaventure, Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer announced a career move of his own. Reposting a clip from his recent appearance on the Devine Intervention podcast, the NBA insider revealed that he is leaving Yahoo Sports while also teasing his next career move.
“And… this was also my last podcast as a senior NBA reporter @YahooSports,” Fischer wrote. “Next week, we’ll run my final article. Stay tuned.”
After initially getting his start as an editor at SB Nation and producer/contributing writer at Sports Illustrated, Fischer first rose to prominence as NBA news-breaker during a nearly two-year stint at Bleacher Report. In September 2022, he joined Yahoo as a senior NBA reporter, establishing himself as one of the online outlet’s top insiders.
Despite his status as a rising star on the ultra-competitive NBA beat, Fischer’s time at Yahoo wasn’t without controversy, as he shared multiple reports during the 2024 NBA Draft that were ultimately proven incorrect. To his credit, Fischer was transparent about the situation, apologizing to his followers for the false reports.
While it appears that Fischer already has his next stop lined up, his move comes at a busy time when it comes to NBA insiders. In addition to Woj’s sudden retirement from the scoops game, both Shams Charania (The Athletic/Stadium/FanDuel) and Chris Haynes (TNT Sports/Bleacher Report) are reportedly set to hit the open market.
Factor in Fischer and it appears that four of the NBA’s top insiders could all have new homes in the not-too-distant future. It will certainly be interesting to see the NBA media’s own version of free agency plays out in what could ultimately wind up being a giant game of musical chairs.
