Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet was told he was fired as manager while working as an analyst for the BBC during the Confederations Cup this weekend. Poyet wasn't informed by the club, but rather by the BBC printing out the statement and handing it to him and then getting his reaction live on the air during halftime. Poyet had managed Brighton since 2009 and earned promotion from League One to the Championship with the club. This past season, Poyet led Brighton one step short of the Premier Leauge, being knocked out in the Championship playoffs. However, things turned sour as Poyet and two other coaches were suspended by the club in mid May after some yet to be disclosed clash with management.
Poyet's firing wasn't a surprise, but he still seems to be a bit taken aback in the ensuing interview. Could you imagine being given the pink slip and instantly reacting to it with the red light on? At least he realizes what a memorable moment this is for his television career from the outset. I can't imagine the transition from talking about your own firing to Roberto Soldado giving Spain a true No. 9 striker was easy, though.
