I'm not going to pretend to know any of the background involved in the following story, but Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy was involved in one of the funniest Twitter Wars I've ever seen earlier this week. The former A's and current Diamondbacks pitcher is regarded as one of the best athletes to follow on Twitter for his humor, especially when it comes to his relationship with his wife Amanda.
McCarthy began this Twitter War by taunting a DragonBall Z fan (parody?) account @Love_that_Goku, which he follows on Twitter. I'm also not going to pretend to know anything about DragonBall Z. The two then exchange amazing insults and threats that seem to be out of a video game. I have no idea if this is supposed to be an elaborate ruse or not, (Deadspin's Patrick Burns called it fanfiction come to life) but it's hilarious either way…
If I'm scoring this, it's a tough, tough decision. Both sides were simply brilliant. Love That Goku was certainly not intimidated by his more famous opponent and kept going back to the well by knocking baseball and touting his powers that border on "miraculous." I thought the crack at McCarthy's skull fracture was a low blow, but then the pitcher used it to his advantage. McCarthy's quips about his mental discipline were fantastic as well. In a fight as close as this, one has to look at the single best blow of the fight, and I'm giving that to McCarthy's line about living in Goku's nightmares. That was like a straight right hand from Muhammad Ali. By the smallest of margins, I'm awarding a majority decision to Brandon McCarthy. Besides, I'm not even sure the other guy is a real person.
