Dayton beat Ohio State in one of the most dramatic games of the first day of the NCAA Tournament thanks to a last second shot by Vee Sanford. This was a huge moment for Dayton basketball. Ohio State has made a habit of ducking their top in-state rivals and instead fill their non-conference home schedule with the likes of Bryant, North Florida, Central Connecticut State, and Louisiana-Monroe. This was Dayton’s chance to prove themselves against big brother who has been avoiding them like the plague.
They did. And then the Dayton Daily News rubbed salt in the wound.
The paper’s front page headline took a shot at the most famous article in higher education with a headline that simply said “THE University of Dayton.” At least the picture that went with it wasn’t an Aaron Craft meme… that would have just been too much.
Hopefully this begins an actually rivalry between the teams that would benefit everyone in Ohio basketball and we don’t have to wait until the next chance tournament meeting.
