The Denver Post has suspended Colorado Avalanche beat writer Adrian Dater for two weeks without pay after the writer used inappropriate language on Twitter. The suspension was handed down after Dater used obscenities in exchanges with other users on October 4th and 5th.
Post Editor Gregory L. Moore commented on the suspension, saying:
“Journalists need to recognize that they need to be professional on all platforms. Social media is no different. The language Adrian used is unacceptable, and he knows it.”
Hockey fans familiar with Dater may claim his worst offense was ranking the Edmonton Oilers the third-best team in the NHL back in 2013, but it’s also common knowledge he loves Sulia and maintains a curt social media presence.
Recently, Dater Tweeted about his hate for defenseman Brayden McNabb, as seen in a screenshot on Hockey Buzz.
Interesting word choice. As you might imagine, it drew a fiery response.
Jesse Spector, a former hockey writer and current baseball writer for Sporting News, called Dater out on his Tweet. You’ll also see Dater’s response to a fan included in the Tweet below.
Getting from Point A to Point B here is remarkable. Just apologize for saying "pussy" and move on, idiot. pic.twitter.com/mkfMFqNa2e

After a couple more Tweets were exchanged between Spector and Dater, the conversation was taken to email. Dater apparently is as courteous there as he is on social media.
So, then I got this email, and I was gonna reply thoughtfully to @adater, but that last line… NOPE pic.twitter.com/U446WLYELx

Long story short, Dater’s tirade earned him two weeks with no pay. Maybe moving forward he’ll be a bit softer around the edges when communicating as a representative of a major news outlet.
