From John Ourand at Sports Business Daily, Jim Rome’s daily CBS Sports Network show, “ROME” will be ending its run in March. This does not mean that Rome is leaving CBS Sports, he still has his radio show as well as Jim Rome on Showtime, but it does mean that the daily television program will be concluding after two years on the air.
“ROME” premiered in April 2012 at 6 p.m. ET as part of an effort to increase the live hours on CBS Sports Network. During the weekday lineup, CBSSN has been airing simulcasts of the Boomer and Carton WFAN radio show as well as Doug Gottlieb’s CBS Sports Radio’s program, but ROME was strictly produced for television.
While Rome will no longer host his daily TV show as of March, he will continue to be seen on other CBS Sports programs including the NFL Today and the NCAA Tournament.
In a statement to SBD, CBS Sports President David Berson praised Rome and stressed that he will remain with the company:
“Together with Jim, we decided to shift focus and produce new projects across CBS Sports Network in place of the daily TV show ‘Rome.’ Jim remains a valuable member of the CBS Sports family, continuing his daily show on CBS Sports Radio, his program on Showtime and his contributions to CBS Sports properties including ‘The NFL Today’ and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.”
For his part, Rome said he was sad to see his daily TV show end, but it was time to move on.
“While I am sad to say goodbye to a show that I am really proud of, I look forward to our fourth season of ‘Jim Rome on Showtime,’ ‘The Jim Rome Show’ on CBS Sports Radio, continued contributions for ‘The NFL Today’ and the NCAA Basketball Tournament and the numerous opportunities this partnership continues to provide.”
Because distribution is limited, CBS Sports Network’s audience is not measured by Nielsen so we don’t know how popular “ROME” was with viewers. It’s not known what show will replace “ROME” at 6 p.m., if the network will go with another original program or decide to slot a repeat of previous programming in its place.
