Suspended Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill has been receiving advice from various sources, but former ESPN football analyst Sean Salisbury is reportedly not one of them.
On his two radio shows, Salisbury claimed that he was hired as a mentor for Hill, but the Texas A&M quarterback’s family denied any involvement with the former NFL veteran.
While Hill has struggled this season and was eventually suspended for two games for violating team rules, it doesn’t make sense that he would turn away from his offensive coordinator Jake Spavital or head coach Kevin Sumlin midseason to hire a private coach. Even if he was looking at a quarterbacking guru like George Whitfield (who contributes to College Gameday and mentored quarterbacks like former A&M QB Johnny Manziel and Notre Dame’s Everett Golson), he would do that in the offseason, not in Week 11.
Salisbury claims that he texted with Hill’s father and has a written record of the two arranging a meeting about mentoring the Aggies’ quarterback, but the Dallas Morning News reports no agreement was met. Salisbury made further comments that his past troubles might have scared the Hills away from bringing him on as a mentor in typical Salisbury fashion, by bashing bloggers:
“If they decide to go in a different direction because of a social media thing from eight years ago, that’s OK, too. … Over a stupid pic in a drunk bar – you know what, they knew that going in. I think you’d want someone who’s been in those life experiences, at least that’s what I was told. And I’ve been in that type of experience, but I can’t control that somebody is sitting in College Station who writes a blog doesn’t like the hire. OK. That’s why that person is writing a blog and I’m coaching and teaching.”
As a sophomore, Hill started the season with a bang with a resounding win against South Carolina, but sputtered when the competition got tougher. He has the makings of a star quarterback in the SEC, but given his sordid history Salisbury is probably not the person to help achieve that goal, especially if the Hill family refuses to acknowledge the agreement in the first place.
