Say what you want but eSports are quickly emerging as the next big thing (If ESPN thinks it’s big enough to hire an editor to oversee, it must be big). Turner Sports announcement in September that it was partnership with WME/IMG to create their own eSports league and now comes news of when that league will begin play.
ELeague will debut on Tuesday, May 24 with the start of a Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament from Turner Studios in Atlanta. Over the course of ten weeks until the, play will be televised across Turner digital platforms with a three-hour block of coverage on Friday nights on TBS, starting at 10 p.m. ET.
A six-week regular reason will be followed by a bye week, one-week last chance qualifier round and two weeks of playoffs. The tournament culminates with the Global Championship, a best-of-three match, on Saturday, July 30, at 4:00 p.m.
They group previously announced that they plan to do two ten-week tournaments a year.
Turner/WME/IMG recently held a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament at the CES convention in Las Vegas. The winning team, OpTic Gaming, walked away with a prize pool and an invitation to participate in the upcoming tournament.
No word yet on whether or not Shaquille O’Neal will be watching, but, probably not.
