According to a report from the Associated Press, Jessica Mendoza will return to ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball booth for the 2016 alongside Dan Shulman. But she won’t be joined in the booth by either John Kruk or Curt Schilling, as Aaron Boone will instead be joining the pair in the booth as the second analyst.
The AP report also notes that Schilling will be taking Boone’s place on Monday Night Baseball, while Kruk is heading back to the Baseball Tonight studio. ESPN confirmed the moves in a release and stated that Eduardo Perez would also be joining Monday Night Baseball, while the duo of Dave Flemming and Karl Ravech would split play by play duties.
Mendoza received plenty of praise for her role on Sunday Night Baseball alongside Shulman and Kruk to close out the 2015 season, and many wanted her to return in 2016 (despite some in the sports media world having an issue with her).
However, I’m wondering how long the new trio lasts on Sunday Night Baseball – three years ago, I wrote about how the booth had become a revolving door, and that still holds true today. Since 2009, ESPN has been experimenting with a variety of different broadcasters in the booth, and for one reason or another, they’ve never been able to stick with a consistent set of announcers.
Will Shulman, Mendoza, and Boone be the new normal, or are we going to be talking about another new grouping in a year or two?
