Amazon Prime Video kicks off its fourth season of exclusive coverage of Thursday Night Football this week, and the streamer’s inventive alternative broadcast, Prime Vision, continues to add new live, on-screen features for viewers.
The broadcast, officially called Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats, utilizes Amazon’s artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities to transmit data and charting in real-time during NFL games. Prime Video uses a “High-Sky” camera angle and dispatches from former Stanford offensive lineman and analytics expert Sam Schwartzstein to deliver a unique viewing experience for Prime subscribers.
Notably, certain aspects of the Prime Vision stream have been incorporated into the regular broadcast, featuring Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit. The most familiar example is the “Pressure Alert” gauge, which identifies the free pass-rusher pre-snap to highlight a potential quarterback hit for viewers.
This season, Prime Vision is introducing four new features:
- An AI-powered “Pocket Health” gauge that measures the strength of the offensive line’s hold throughout a play
- A “Path To Victory” chart that will inform viewers of the projected number of possessions left in a game based upon time and the teams’ remaining timeouts
- A “Time Remaining Prediction” metric that will display the projected time remaining late in a game, should the defense get a “3 and Out”
- A “Victory Formation” metric that lists the amount of time an offense needs to target before kneeling the ball to end a game
A photo of the “Pocket Health” gauge going red on a play by Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence can be seen below:
As promised when it secured exclusive TNF rights under the latest NFL media rights deal, Amazon has continued to innovate with data and analytics on its coverage. The Prime Vision broadcast serves as a feeder system for new on-air features and has proven to captivate audiences with viral clips each season.
Thursday Night Football begins this week as the Green Bay Packers host the Washington Commanders.
