On Tuesday, longtime Washington Post sportswriter Dan Steinberg announced on social media that it would be his last day at the newspaper. And it turns out, it didn’t take Steinberg all that long to find a new position, which was announced and later confirmed by Steinberg on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports shared a letter he was sent that originally came from Alison Cotsonika, The Athletic’s senior managing editor. The letter was to staff members at The Athletic, welcoming Steinberg on as the NFL managing editor at the New York Times-owned publication.

Steinberg would confirm the news in a post on Wednesday minutes after Glasspiegel’s post.

According to Cotsonika’s letter, Steinberg will work closely with senior NFL writers Michael Silver and Jourdan Rodrigue, along with NFL insider Dianna Russini as apart of his new responsibilities at The Athletic. Additionally, he will oversee the coverage of the Washington Commanders for outlet, which makes sense given his lengthy track record on the Washington sports beat for over two decades.

Steinberg’s hiring comes shortly after it was revealed last month that Ben Standig’s contract was not renewed by The Athletic.

In light of the announcement, he heard plenty of questions from Commanders fans about whether he’d be replacing Standig. It appears that won’t be the case, but he teased that there was “more news” to come soon about the Commanders beat.

On paper, Steinberg certainly seems to be the perfect man for this position given the fact that he supervised NFL coverage for the Washington Post last season and had been an editor at the Post since 2018.
