Sunday turned out to be a very bad day for the many Kansas City Chiefs haters in the NFL world.
Perhaps “hater” is too strong a word, but it’s easier than saying, “Fans who are sick and tired of seeing the Chiefs win again and again … and again.”
The NFL Today analyst Nate Burleson sent a message to those fans Sunday night.
The Chiefs nipped the Buffalo Bills, 32-29, in the AFC Championship to punch their ticket to their fifth Super Bowl in the past six seasons. The two-time defending champions will now look to become the first NFL team to win three straight Super Bowls when they meet the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
Of course, there is a sizable contingent of fans and media who are tired of the Chiefs, for multiple reasons. The incessant talk about the greatness of Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid’s commercials. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The conspiracy theories about referees and the NFL favoring the Chiefs to boost TV ratings.
But probably the biggest reason so many fans dislike the Chiefs is they have consistently crushed the spirits of other teams and fans around the league so many times in recent years.
After the AFC Championship, Burleson addressed all those other NFL fans who are “fatigued” with seeing the Chiefs in another Super Bowl.
“If you’re not a Chiefs fan, that’s OK,” Burleson said. “But resist the urge to fall for the narrative that we’re tired of seeing them win, that we might be fatigued of watching KC go to the Super Bowl over and over again. You are witnessing greatness. And just be happy that you are alive to be there to see it.”
Burleson made some good points. The Chiefs are on the brink of history. Yet expect that “Chiefs fatigue” theme to get plenty of discussion ahead of Super Bowl LIX.
