Add Vance from Georgia into the annals of legendary Paul Finebaum callers.
The show that has a reputation for finding some of the most eccentric SEC fans on earth and putting them on the air added to its lore Wednesday.
Vance from Georgia’s call on that show began rather innocuously. “Paul, I watched, uh, what’s his name, Stephen A. Smith. He wants to keep crowing that Deion Sanders should be up for coach of the year.”
But it didn’t take much for Vance to say something completely off the rails. “Will you shut up! I’m trying to talk to Paul,” Vance said out of nowhere.
A perplexed Finebaum responded, “Hey Vance, exactly who did you, uh, who is there?” “My damn cat!” Vance replied, to which a relieved Finebaum said, “Oh, okay.”
Ever a journalist, the famed SEC Network radio host felt compelled to clear up the cat situation later in the phone call.
“Hey Vance, out of pure curiosity, what type of cat do you have,” Finebaum inquired. “They’re two feral cats and I brought them in the house in 2006, Paul.”
“They’re still around?” Finebaum asked letting out a surprised laugh. “Yeah they’re old. Good God these things are like Jim,” Vance said referring to the infamous recurring Finebaum caller Jim from Tuscaloosa.
Housing two feral cats since 2006? That is eighteen years of phone calls being interrupted for Vance! Props to him for giving those cats a home. And props to Finebaum for checking in and making sure Vance’s words weren’t directed towards another human, because that would’ve made for a much more serious circumstance.
