A Richard Jefferson quote has gotten the aggregate treatment and taken on a life of its own. Jefferson, who played for eight teams across his 17-season NBA career, has seen his words go viral on X (formerly Twitter) after being on the call for Sunday’s Dallas Mavericks-Los Angeles Clippers playoff game alongside Ryan Ruocco.
Despite Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving combining for 64 points, Dallas still fell short in a 109-97 loss in Game 1. The Mavericks never entirely overcame a 26-point halftime deficit after scoring just eight points in the second quarter.
Yet Jefferson thinks the Mavericks, who are now down 1-0 in the series, have the advantage.
“The thing about these 7-game series is the team that loses has the advantage,” Jefferson said.
However, as others pointed out, Jefferson’s remarks could’ve been taken out of context. His point was that losses offer a chance to dissect what the opponent did well and what mistakes you made. Wins, on the other hand, don’t require much alteration in strategy. He was focusing on the tactical approach, not just the overall series result.
With that, Game 2 often sees the losing team from Game 1 play with a newfound desperation. They bring more aggression, hunger, and defensive intensity, which in turn makes it crucial for the Game 1 winner to maintain their focus.
Jefferson’s colleague at the Worldwide Leader, Kendrick Perkins, came to his defense. “Perk” didn’t care about the context here and was willing to go to bat for Jefferson regardless.
Perkins made sure to emphasize Jefferson’s wealth of playoff experience as a reason to value his insights, even if some might take his comments differently. With 140 playoff games, four NBA Finals appearances, and a championship ring, Jefferson undoubtedly has a lot to teach about the postseason.
We’ll have to see how Game 2 of the series unfolds before making any declaration on Jefferson’s quote. He’ll undoubtedly be dunked on if the Mavericks falter and likely won’t receive credit if they can tie the series up.
Regardless, the pressure to capitalize on a dominant Game 1 victory likely falls on the Clippers, especially considering Kawhi Leonard’s absence and the chance to take a 2-0 series lead into Dallas.
