SportsCenter anchor Kevin Negandhi got to live every dad’s dream at the Field of Dreams in Iowa. And he wasn’t going to let a little rain get in his way.
ESPN’s flagship programming is continuing their 50 states in 50 days tour across the country, highlighting sports fandom from sea to shining sea. And the best moments are usually the ones that don’t happen covering pro teams that we see all the time, but from the heartwarming moments in places that don’t get visited very often.
Major League Baseball has done a fantastic job incorporating the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa as a site for regular season baseball games that have delivered wonderful moments in recent years. And with SportsCenter hitting Iowa on Saturday, it was Kevin Negandhi’s turn.
Except… things didn’t go exactly according to plan.
As Negandhi joined the program for his live shot, you could see that he and his two sons were soaked from head to toe in a torrential downpour. But even some Biblical rain wasn’t going to stop them from living in the moment and “having a catch” at the famous diamond in the cornfields of Iowa.
What an awesome moment and kudos to Kevin Negandhi and everyone at SportsCenter for going ahead with it in spite of the elements working against them. Scott Van Pelt was right that sports represents a unique element that can bring us all together, even in particularly divided and divisive times in our society.
Of course, we might still be divided on whether “have a catch” makes any sense linguistically, but at least the Negandhi family stayed faithful to the movie script.
