While the eyes of the college football world will be locked on Saturday’s matchup between No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Alabama, Colin Cowherd doesn’t believe that either team will win the national championship. In fact, he doesn’t believe either of those teams is even the best in the SEC.
Joel Klatt, Fox’s top college football analyst, was a guest of Cowherd’s on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Wednesday. Klatt was discussing Saturday’s heavyweight fight between the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide. Cowherd took the chance to praise the Tennessee Volunteers, who are coming off of a big win against Oklahoma.
“Those two teams aren’t the best teams in the SEC,” Cowherd said of Georgia and Alabama. “I’m gonna call it right now. Tennessee is gonna win the national championship. I came on this show before the Oklahoma game, and I said ‘Oklahoma is — they’re not gonna score. Tennessee’s got the best defense in college football. Excellent coach. Explosive offensively. I think Tennessee’s the best team I’ve seen. Tell me I’m wrong.”
“You’re wrong,” Klatt quickly retorted.

While we could break down Cowherd’s points, comparing the Volunteers to the Bulldogs, Crimson Tide and all of college football’s other top teams, there was a more pressing issue to discuss. Is the Colin Cowherd vote of confidence something you necessarily want?
Cowherd’s predictions are anything but gospel. He’s struggled with his NFL predictions on the young season. Heck, he even struggled to correctly pick a winner on a game that had already been played.
Knowing that, several listeners seemed to think Cowherd’s prediction was the kiss of death for Tennessee’s national championship hopes.

Tennessee has both Alabama and Georgia remaining on the schedule. So, we’ll get a chance to see how accurate Cowherd’s idea is that the Volunteers are better than both the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs.
Also, since Tennessee is on a bye week, we know that Cowherd’s prediction won’t immediately backfire.
