On Friday, broadcaster Connor Onion tweeted a video saying he’d be making his MLB broadcasting debut Saturday on FS1 for the network’s broadcast of Rangers-Astros. The young sportscaster has called games across the spectrum for ESPN, Fox, and Big Ten Network in his career thus far.
In the video, Onion thanked fans and reminisced on his broadcast history with Quad Cities and in college at Ball State and Southern Illinois.
“I’m off to Houston today. Got an exciting opportunity to make my Major League broadcasting debut, calling Rangers-Astros Saturday afternoon for Fox… this is obviously something I’ve been thinking about for a long, long time but wouldn’t happen without so many people,” Onion said.
Onion will call the game alongside AJ Pierzynski and Ken Rosenthal.
During ESPN’s broadcast of the Quick Lane Bowl in December, Connor Onion went viral for some of his commentary about Minnesota’s passing-light performance. He’s called a lot of college sports this season for the Big Ten Network, including football and basketball, and also called midweek MACtion last fall for ESPN.
A step up to MLB coverage makes sense, especially given Saturday’s game is a lower-profile FS1 game that isn’t a national exclusive. It’s a good way for any broadcaster to get their feet wet on the national stage calling one of the Big Four sports.
