The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders played one of the wildest fourth quarters in NFL history Sunday, and NFL on Fox’s Joe Davis and Greg Olsen scrambled to keep up with the flurry of action.
In the end, they showed why they’re considered among the best in the business. Davis’ call on the Commanders’ 86-yard touchdown pass in particular was still drawing rave reviews on social media Monday.
The Cowboys led 10-9 midway through the fourth quarter when chaos erupted. Dallas outscored Washington 24-17 the rest of the way. There were many great plays, none more spectacular than Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels hitting Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard touchdown pass with less than a half minute remaining.
Davis rocked the call: “Half a minute, no timeouts, Daniels throws down the sideline. For Terry McLaurin! McLaurin is loose! Lightning! Strikes! Twice! In Washington!”
The “Lightning strikes twice” referred to the Commanders’ Hail Mary game-winning TD against the Bears on Oct. 27.
Washington kicker Austin Siebert then missed the PAT, and if you’re the sort that believes in announcer jinxes, Davis noted before the kick, “You hold your breath with anything special teams-related on this day.”
Davis is no stranger to big moments. He was the play-by-play announcer for Freddie Freeman’s historic grand slam in World Series Game 1. While we’ve come to expect Davis to deliver great calls in big moments, his “Lightning strikes twice” call on the Commanders’ TD earned plenty of notice on social media.
